CULTURAL AND ARTISTIC CENTER

The concept for this project is the creation and modeling of spaces through rehabilitation and application of the concepts of light, color and matter.
The building is known as the Champalimaud house/palace, and was built on a former farm in Lisbon, being used as a residence, then as a temporary accommodation for returnees displaced from former colonies.
In a context where the conservation, restoration and rehabilitation of non-monumental buildings in historical centers is gaining increasing attention, it was intended to operate in the building preserving its identity through rehabilitation, and to contribute to an improvement of the surrounding area responding to local needs by creating enhanced spaces with the use and function of color.
The proposed spaces intend to promote social and cultural interaction of its users by creating spaces of artistic production and exhibition. Atmospheres that seek to motivate and encourage people to develop and be creative, allowing the propagation of local artists works and reflecting the art and culture of the different ethnic groups that exist in the surrounding area.

Besides intervening in the pre-existent building, the plan was to build an auditorium for presentations of art, making the whole building a cultural center with a strong artistic and expository component.
The topic was approached through an investigation of the aspects which can and should be taken towards the pre-existent model in the rehabilitation process, taking into account the materials, colors and textures as means of expression and qualification of architecture.
